Education content at EGX

Looking to further your career in the gaming industry? Whether you’re a student, trying to change careers, or just wanting to brush up on your skills, EGX is the place for you! We’ve put together some handy tips on how to get the most out of the GI Academy Zone.

GI Academy Stage

At EGX we have a whole stage that is dedicated to career content. Across the 4 days, you’ll be able to get the inside scope on what’s happening in the video games world. Be sure to check out our stage schedule for more details coming soon on what you can expect to see!

Portfolio reviews

Meet with mentors! If you’d like your CV, covering letter, website, or portfolio reviewed by an industry professional, we have you covered! Over the duration of the event, portfolio reviews will be taking place, and you’ll be able to gain invaluable advice from gaming gurus!

If you’d like to have your application checked, we recommend the following:

  • Bring a couple print-outs of your CV/covering letter or portfolio with you. Either yourself or the reviewer will be able to add notes to your documents, making it easier for you to remember their suggestions when you get home.

  • Have a notepad or voice recording app to hand. You might learn some awesome advice that you won’t want to forget!

  • Found a job advert that you like? Bring it along for our reviewers to look at! A helpful games industry wizard will be able to tell you what areas to look out for.

  • Check out the schedule to see what gaming professionals are available on each days. This way you’ll be able to plan who you’d like to see, making sure they fit with your career path.

Grab a copy of GI Magazine

In the Academy area, you’ll be able to come along and pick up the GI Academy magazine which is packed with guides about getting into the industry, helpful CV tips, and more! Make sure to pick one up when you’re checking out the area.

Network Tips

Exploring the Academy zone is a great opportunity to meet and network with friendly industry people. We get that this can feel a little overwhelming, so here’s some handy pointers on how to make great first impressions.

  • Get connected! Bring a business card, or a QR code, that your new industry pals can scan to get access to your website or LinkedIn profile.

  • Wear what makes you feel good. Got an outfit that makes you feel confident, or maybe a lucky Zelda t-shirt with a super cool design? Gamer threads are a fab way to strike up conversations, and maybe we’re biased, but they look pretty awesome! Wearing something you feel good in will help put you in the right frame of mind, setting you up for a great day.

  • Don’t be afraid to chat to new people! At EGX, everyone is always happy to help and eager to talk with fellow gamers. Visit the many booths in this area, or be bold and head to the Rezzed Zone to chat with indie game developers. They’ll have some interesting stories about how they started in industry!

  • Lastly: Have fun! EGX is a happy, positive event, and we want you to have the best time possible.

Use the Academy Passport

Still unsure on what to do? Or just want a handy guide? Get yourself an Academy Passport from the GI Academy area at the show! This helpful guide will have a list of everything you can do at the event, and if you scan all the stops you can graduate and win a prize! Keep an eye on our social channels for more information about this in the coming weeks.
